Manchester City Council in partnership with the official charity partner the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation are delighted to announce that this year, the City of Champions Special Recognition Award will go to Vincent Kompany for his contribution to North West Sport and Humanitarianism.

The former Manchester City captain, now back in his native Belgium as manager of Anderlecht, will receive the award at a star-studded event at The Hilton Hotel, Deansgate on Thursday 31 October.

The ‘City of Champions’ gala dinner is an annual event that aims to acknowledge and celebrate the success of people in the areas of sport, education and business, who are giving back to the next generation of champions.

Considered to be the most successful Manchester City football captain of all time, the City of Champions chose to honour Vincent not just for his outstanding contribution to English football, having won every domestic trophy, but also for his charity work not least via Tackle4MCR, a co-operation with the Mayor of Manchester’s office to tackle homelessness in the city.

Commenting on his Award Vincent said: “During my time as Captain of Manchester City, I enjoyed some incredible moments both on and off the pitch and I will always be grateful to the people of Manchester.  I’ve been in the lucky position to be able to help make a difference and through our support of Andy Burnham’s charity, I hope that Tackle4MCR will go some way to helping to eradicate the growing problem of rough sleeping and homelessness in our city. Thank you to the City of Champions for this Special Recognition Award.”

Co-founder and CEO of DMSF, the official charity partner of the event, Diane Modahl, said: “We are honoured that Vincent has accepted the Special Recognition Award. Vincent’s a natural and inspiring leader, as well as a footballing legend, and he has been so influential both on the pitch and off the pitch. Vincent has forever changed the landscape with how high profile sporting individuals can impact and influence beyond sport. His Tackle4Manchester initiative means we are one step closer to ending rough sleeping and homelessness. He is the obvious choice for this Award.”
